DTM: Talent review
All three DTM manufacturers reviewed young drivers at the first mid-season test session in Jerez last week.
We’ve already written about new guys who worked for BMW in Spain and together with the manufacturer’s official drivers drove over 7.500 km for 3 days.
Audi gave a chance for 6 lucky players: Porsche Carrera Cup Nicki Thiim (DEN) whose father Kurt used to be DTM driver in 90s, endurance-racing ace Laurens Vanthoor (BEL), Formula 2 champion and GP3 runner-up Dean Stoneman (GBR), European Formula Open driver Alex Palou (ESP) and two Italians – Antonio Giovinazzi (FIA Formula 3 European Championship) and Marco Mapelli (GT).
Mercedes also invited F3 drivers: the champion Esteban Ocon (FRA) who won all three races at Moscow Raceway last summer, Macau GP winner Felix Rosenqvist (SWE) as well as Austria's Lucas Auer (Gerhard Berger’s nephew) who was the 4th in FIA European F3 in 2014. Besides Mercedes C-Coupe DTM was also driven by Formula 1 test driver Charles Pic (FRA) and Blancpain Sprint champion Maximilian Götz (GER).
In 2015 Mercedes plans to have one additional car, so anyone of these five men may be a candidate for a vacant place. Sad point: Vitaly Petrov’s future is still undecided as he unfortunately failed to score this year. The Russian driver did not participate in this test session…
DTM new season will be started on the first May weekend in Hockenheim, and Moscow Raceway round is scheduled for the last summer weekend.
